Chaturaji is an ancient Indian board game from the 6th century, known as ‘four kings’. Playable by four individuals or two teams of two, it is a variant of the popular Chaturanga but with its unique aspect of incorporating chance through dice.
With a fascinating history rooted in rich Indian culture, it was a favorite pastime of kings to hone their mental and strategic skills. Unlike traditional chess, though played on an 8×8 board, Chaturaji uses dice to determine piece movements. Each player has four pieces: an elephant, a horse, a boat (rook), and a king, each with characteristic movements. The goal is to capture the opposing kings, blending strategy and luck. Players must anticipate opponents’ moves and adapt to dice outcomes.
